CITH 2023 SW1-5 (CITH W-1, W-2, W-3, W-4, W-5)

Technology Details:
Technology includes the walnut varieties (CITH-W-1, CITH-W-2, CITH-W-3, CITH-W-4 & CITH-W-5) released by ICAR-CITH, Srinagar, which are high yielding with superior nut and kernel characteristics. These varieties have very high potential for export due to better nut/kernel size and higher kernel recovery. Nut size of these varieties may go upto 28 g (CITH-W-1) which is highest in the world and hence have higher consumer acceptability and market demand. These varieties need promotion at higher level to replace present poor quality scattered plantations for obtaining high quality uniform produce. Therefore commercialization of these varieties will make sure the availability of uniform superior quality walnut produce in India and thus promote export. Brief description of the varieties is detailed below:
CITH W-1: A protogynous, terminal as well as lateral bearing variety and mid-season blooming variety. Nuts and kernels are very large (28.0 and 14.16 g respectively), higher kernel recovery (50.57%), higher lateral flowering (51.78%), higher yield (60 kg/tree), light shell colour, soft shelled, well filled kernel, plumy, very easy to remove full kernel halves light in colour. It shows tolerant to biotic stresses except white grub and susceptible to moisture stress. Suitable to grow under entire temperate climatic conditions of North Western Himalayan agro-eco system:
CITH W-2: It is protogynous, predominantly terminal bearing and early-season blooming variety. Nuts are large (21.90g), medium kernel (11.24 g), good kernel recovery (51.27%), higher yield (60 kg/tree), semi-soft, well filled kernel, plumy, easy to remove full kernel halves and light kernel colour. Crop has field tolerance to pests except white grub. Variety is suitable to grow under entire temperate climatic conditions of North Western Himalayan agro-eco system.:
CITH W-3: The variety is protogynous, terminal as well as lateral (16%) bearing and late in maturity. Nuts are large (18.33 g), kernel are medium (10 g), kernel recovery is high (54.55%), higher yield (40 kg/tree), good kernel flavour, well filled kernel, plumy, moderate to remove kernel halves light in colour. It shows field tolerance to pests except white grub and susceptible to moisture stress. Variety is suitable to grow under entire temperate climatic conditions of North Western Himalayan agro-eco system.:
CITH W-4: The protoandrous, terminal as well as lateral (25.35%) and late-season variety. Nuts are large (19.43 g), kernel are bold (11.54 g), higher yield (45 kg/tree), very high kernel recovery (59.39%), light shell colour, thin shelled, good kernel flavour, well filled kernel, moderately plumy, very easy to remove kernel halves and light kernel colour. It shows field tolerance to pests except white grub. Variety is suitable to grow under entire temperate climatic conditions of North Western Himalayan agro-eco system.:
CITH W-5: It is protoandrous, terminal as well as lateral bearing (29.31%) and late-season maturing variety. Nuts are large (19.84 g), bold kernel (10.40 g), higher yield (50 kg/tree), high kernel recovery (52.42%), smooth shell texture, light shell colour, good kernel flavour, well filled kernel, plumy, moderate to remove kernel halves and light kernel colour. They show field tolerance to diseases & pests except white grub. Variety is suitable to grow under entire temperate climatic conditions of North Western Himalayan agro-eco system. Special features of the varieties:
Characteristic feature (s) Value:
Nut weight (g) 18.33 to 28.00:
Kernel weight (g) 10.0 0 to 13.16:
Kernel recovery (%) 50.57 to 59.39:
Kernel color Light:
Shell strength Soft (Thin shelled but strong enough to avoid transportation losses):
Keeping in view the cross-pollinated nature of the crop we need to commercialize the varieties in groups to ensure the proper pollination at the site of plantation. Therefore based on the compatibility (over lapping flowering time) we can license the varieties in following groups:
1. CITH-W-1, CITH-W-3 & CITH-W-5:
2. CITH-W-2, CITH-W-4 & CITH-W-5:
3. CITH-W-1, CITH-W-4 & CITH-W-5:
4. CITH-W-3, CITH-W-4 & CITH-W-5:
5. CITH-W-3, CITH-W-4 & CITH-W-2:
